Ender 3 Extruder Skipping - Help Needed

Started happening about a month or so ago. Looking for some advice on a solution to fix it. The symptoms are exactly the same as this video. If I watch it, within 1-2 minutes I'll see the Extruder Gear spring backwards several steps with backlash. Attempted fixes below, and Cura settings below that.

________________

Attempted Fixes:

  • Bumped Temperature +5/10 Degrees

  • Printed 0.5/1.0mm Spring Tension Fixer for Extruder Arm

  • Changed Filaments

  • Cleaned Hotend/Nozzle

  • Reseated PTFE Tube

  • Cleaned Extruder Gear Teeth

________________

Settings:

  • Layer Height: 0.2mm

  • Line Width: 0.4mm

  • Printing Temperature: 200°C (Up to 210°C)

  • Build Plate Temperature: 60°C

  • Flow 98%

  • Retraction 6.5mm

  • Retraction Speed: 85.0mm/s

  • Retraction Minimum: 0.4mm

  • Print Speed: 60mm/s

  • Wall Speed: 30mm/s

  • Travel Speed: 120mm/s

  • Acceleration: 500mm/s2

  • Travel Acceleration: 5,000mm/s2

  • Retract Before Outer Wall: On

  • Z-Hop On Retraction: On

If I've missed any that may be relative, please let me know and I'll add.

For anyone who may come past this in the future, looking for a solution. It turns out the problem was caused by CURA, I had a setting on which primed the nozzle after retraction to prevent under-extrusion after traveling. For whatever reason, this was causing the problem. Disabling it/setting it to 0mm2 immediately resolved the skipping. However, did bring on under extrusion after travels. My settings for retractions still need tuning more. Buying a new Extruder was not required.

You can print slower, and you can turn up the heat. It will help.
You can also crank up the juice for the extruder stepper. Seems they have a bad batch where they are underpowered, mine was one of them.
I ended up putting a titan aero on it and putting the stock crap in a parts bin.

Since you haven't tried re-leveling the bed yet;

Probably due to incorrect bed leveling. Nozzle too close to bed/model: opening is blocked off.

Fixed it for me.

Thanks, I have an aluminum one coming from Creality next week, which I ordered on a flash sale they had running. I'll try that before trying to work out how to get a good Bulldog sent to Australia which won't cost a quarter of the printer cost.

I sort of feel like something else is going on here though, since tension on my filament doesn't seem to be the issue considering the toothed gear stops moving/pushing for a few seconds before recalling back a few steps. The step skipping is also worse at lower temperatures.

Too late to cancel, regardless it is still a step up from plastic.

My prints aren't failing, in fact despite the skipping you can't actually see any signs of under extrusion on them at all, but I know it shouldn't be doing it, and it is clearly a symptom of something, somewhere, and if it isn't resolved, it probably will get to the point of causing actual problems.

Bed is also perfectly trammed, and I use a BL Touch with 16 point mesh bed leveling on top of that as well, so it isn't a minimal nozzle distance causing back pressure from poor filament flow as my Z-Offset has remained tuned.

Backlash in the extruder also happens at lower speed (and like I said higher temperatures) so it doesn't seem to be material not melting quick enough as it's forced out. I didn't mention playing with the speeds because 60mm/s isn't exactly fast, and temperature increases should offset that enough.

It usually doesn't happen on short prints, but anything past 1-2 hours and I'll start hearing and seeing it.

E-Steps are calibrated, I'll try dropping the flow down by 5%. Thank you for the suggestion with that.
