I kept crayfish for a while, they are pretty easy but I think they like well oxygenated moving water.
I do have a few plants in there. Just added some more last night. However, I mainly have the plants in there for food for the crayfish. There's really no hope of keeping plants in a crayfish tank undisturbed. I just put extra cuttings in there.
I think the HOB filter gives enough surface agitation to provide enough oxygen in the water.
