Had an idea this morning that I'm gonna throw here before discussing.

With the Clash now come and gone, we had a major increase in reports (thank you for reporting posts) and even bigger increase in posts that didn't belong as posts. Casual users of the sub don't read the rules or come here for Meta Monday, so how would a stickied comment in the pre-race threads work with both the rules and MM? I'll be honest, we removed a lot yesterday and didn't have time to leave a reason for their removal.

Amen to that. This has been extremely helpful the past week or so.

how would a stickied comment in the pre-race threads work

I honestly think we should make a stickied post for a week or so with a reminder/refresher on the rules for the start of the new season. Things get changed after discussion in Meta Monday, but it's not really an "official" place for announcements. A nice official modpost stickied for a few days with a summary of the wiki might remind people of things they may have forgotten (because nobody ever visits the wiki anymore)

In my opinion there should be a "Going to the 500" thread (for questions, meetups, free tickets, etc) since it's such a big event. The wiki just isn't as obvious as a place to go and no discussion can be had there

We used to have weekly Track Talk Tuesday threads, but nobody participated in those, either. :(

I think a Daytona one would garner solid participation. Doesn't have to be a weekly thread

A general stickied post would work. I know we're limited on stickied threads and I didn't wanna suggest it for that reason but you're right in the fact that there were a LOT of Twitter/Facebook type posts that didn't belong here. Maybe a stickied comment after the 500 in a few pre-race threads until we see a decrease in those low quality posts if the stickied post reminder is forgotten. Just trying to find as many convenient places to put the reminders as possible.

level 4

I get what you're trying to do, but just as a general user, I'm not a fan of stickies in comment sections unless they're highly relevant (for example, a driver is injured badly and a sticky linking to a post discussing that injury to keep the "just got here, what happened to _____" comments to a minimum in a race thread).

Especially in "live" discussion threads, where you'll be refreshing a lot, i don't like having to scroll past the sticky 300 times. The idea of "trying to find as possible" to put a "be good, follow the rules" comment sticky isn't exciting to me.

It won't be the end of the sub if it's done and sorry if it comes across as overly negative, but that's my opinion and input.

This is the very reason I brought it up here, we can do anything with posts or the sub but we need input from users to know what's a good change or bad change. Doesn't seem like the stickied comment idea is preferred so we'll likely just make one stickied posted with the rules and remind users to review.

Appreciate the input and being blunt but respectful with the response, doesn't happen too often so it's nice to see.

level 6

I appreciate the open discussion with the community about the sub; that's very rare, as well.

As i said in my previous, I'm not a huge fan of it in general, but i would still keep the idea on the back burner in case it's necessary. If the toxicity is out of control 500 weekend then it might be the necessary next step to get people back in line.

So, even as someone that hopes it doesn't need to happen, i think "let's see how this weekend goes" is the best course of action. It is a good, proactive solution if things are out of control and is better than letting things get out of hand.

You can always sticky an index thread if you are honestly interested in cleaning the sub up. r/fantasyfootball is an example of this done to the extreme.

If you are just using sticky limits as an excuse you can ignore...

level 2

I'm guessing those same users aren't really going to let a stickied comment get in their way of posting things immediately after something like the end of the race yesterday.

So pictures of

  • video game cases

  • a guy's tv with a Nascar 08 loading screen

  • shitty goodwill finds

are still good enough to make the cut? I was hoping it was just offseason shit posting but it seems like it's not going to stop.

You mean you don’t want to see an undusted collection of 2 00s Winner’s Circle 1:24s, a COT missing its wing and a 1:64 from a McDonald’s Happy Meal?

I just don't understand why so much low effort bullshit is allowed at all. I get this is a fairly niche sub but there's plenty of actual content now that we don't need this place constantly flooded with this crap. I mean, seriously, a picture of a tv with a loading screen. WTF.

level 3

The people who have an issue are the ones responsible for solving it. AKA: scroll past it, no one else has a problem, therefore no one else needs a solution.

EXACTLY!!! Don't like it then fucking move on! Its more annoying to see the fucking whining than it is the postsc they're whining about.

Why have rules at all then?

level 5

To keep it NASCAR-related and respectful of other users. Diecast posts and whatever are fine in both regards.

This mod team is awesome. You guys do great work.

I thank you all for the work you do and will be doing. Especially on the race threads. It brings out the worst in the sub but it also is what makes it feel the most like a community.

Thanks for what you all do

Stickied comment sounds good to me. Just a guess based on the nature of the sport, but I would think that consistent Reddit users who are NASCAR fans would already be subbed, meaning that a large proportion of new subs would be people who haven't used Reddit in the past. So establishing the rules right below the comment submission form might be useful to establish to new users that it's not a free-for-all.

level 2

I think if it helps facilitate things smoother do it. To a point, I know things are run as close to user friendly or convenient as possible. But as this thing grows, the more the presence of structure needs to be apparent. Any any rate, even in the absence of Mods, people who have been here a while and know how things are, can easily point things out in reference to the casual lurker that pops in on race threads without regard who what the rules are. So in saying that. Sticky the comment however you guys feel it needs to be distributed.

level 2

Can't hurt. I've wished for awhile we had the rules stickied since the "I didn't know, I'm new" excuse is thrown around often.

level 2

I like this idea, and I appreciate you guys soliciting input!
